HANAKAM & SCHULLER

Grotto

28.10.23 – 17.12.23

CCA Andratx is pleased to present the video artwork Grotto by the German-Austrian artist duo Hanakam & Schuller, who are staying at the CCA Studios during October 2023. They have designed a 3D ANIMATED GROTTO for screening - a digital trompe l'oeil - with the element of water as the narrating voice. The scene is set in a fictional grotto, an ornately designed cave. This voice-over is based on Ovid's verses from the Fasti, specifically the scene of Egeria, in which the water nymph, the figure of a female advisor, is transformed into the spring itself. Hanakam & Schuller's work is a playful commentary on the mostly anonymous designs of youtube relaxation screens.

Voice Over is based on excerpts of Ovid Fasti Book III – March 1 (Egeria Scene)

Voice Over Artist: Jim Libby. Recorded at Amann Studios Vienna.

The artist duo Hanakam & Schuller live and work in Vienna, Austria. Many of their work are shapeshifters, changing their outer form and then reappearing in various contexts. As artists and explorers, Markus Hanakam (1979, Essen, Germany) and Roswitha Schuller (1984, Friesach, Austria) redesign the rules of fine art for their own purposes and create unconventional arrangements and designs of new worlds in videos and objects. They also work with applied artforms. Their video-animation The Borgia Device (Second Day) is part of the exhibition ANTHROPOCENE ON HOLD - 20 artists address the impact of a global pandemic on arts ecosystems and the resilience and sustainability of the Earth - at PCAI Polyeco Contemporary Art Initiative in Piraeus, Greece, curated by Kika Kyriakakou, accompanied by a catalogue with Hans Ulrich Obrist, Nadim Samman, Selina Nwulu (2020-21).
