ROBBIN HEYKER

teLLIT-teLLIT-teLLIT

20.03.21 – 20.06.21

CCA Andratx is pleased to present —for the first time in Mallorca— an exhibition by Dutch artist Robbin Heyker, featuring a new body of works created during his stay at the CCA Studios in December 2020 and January 2021.

For this exhibition the artist presents a new series of “birding paintings”. Robbin, who is a passionate birdwatcher, dedicated his time in Andratx to exploring and identifying local bird species. His studio routine involved daily two hour-long walks around the surrounding area observing these birds, enabling him to identify them not only by form and color, but also by listening to their song.

The exhibition’s title, teLLIT-teLLIT-teLLIT, shows Robbin’s enthusiasm for the magic trick. Just as a magic trick unravels when explained, these words draw us into a creative game with the artist, helping us decipher which birds we are looking at. Here is a little hint: ‘teLLIT-teLLIT-teLLIT’ phonetically spells out the call of one of Mallorca’s most beautiful bird species, the goldfinch. This bird’s song is a pleasant silvery twittering, a melodic tickeLIT  that always includes the tri-syllabic call phrase or a teLLIT-teLLIT-teLLIT.

Filtered through an abstract lens, these investigations result in agile and playful paintings, yet methodologically composed. Every bird is reduced to a combination of colorful and gestural brushstrokes recalling the actual species, however magically transporting the observer to a natural setup in which abstraction and realism merge harmoniously.

“It’s a play between my rigid consciousness and the matter itself. One rule of my game is that all the colors of the specific bird should be present. Mostly I lay them in by loosely following the order of the body. And the strokes should be strokes. Just like making a mark, they are quick-fix solutions to painting birds, without literally painting a bird.”
