Artists in residence, May 2023
Wendy Cabrera
Within the Artists-in-Residence Program, CCA is delighted to host the artist Wendy Cabrera, as the recipient of the 2022 Untitled Art CCA Artist-in-Residence Prize. Born in 1993 in Mexico City, Wendy explores the performativity of historical materials using research and fiction to create a theatrical space that allows her to make visible the relations between aesthetics and ideology present in the mechanisms of production and distribution of images. Her work is characterised by a series of crossovers that cross the boundaries between high and low culture, image and object, narrative and action, through textile and theatrical work, or through the historical study of mass culture, especially caricature and animation. Wendy lives and works in Mexico City and will be staying in Studio Amarillo during May 2023.
Sune Christiansen
Within the Artists-in-Residence Program, CCA is delighted to host the artist Sune Christiansen. Born in 1976 in Denmark, Sune completed his MA in graphic design and animation from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Before taking up painting he has been working as an art director and animator at The Danish National Broadcasting Company from 2007. Christiansen has developed a signature approach to figurative abstraction that is as ambiguous and suggestive as it is playful and inviting. The body language of his characters often evokes such broad themes as hierarchical power dynamics, hieroglyphs and other pictorial language structures, religious devotional practices and the symbolism of intimacy and sexuality. Sune lives and works in Copenhagen and will be staying in Studio Azul during May 2023.
Hayley Barker
Within the Artists-in-Residence Program, CCA is delighted to host the artist Hayley Barker. Born in 1973 in Oregon, United States, Hayley’s nuanced landscape and nature paintings strike a seemingly impossible harmony between intimacy and grandeur. Her subjects are sometimes explicitly rendered from life – the tree from her bedroom window, the view across her yard, or the plants on her windowsill – and yet they seem to come from an interior place, balancing real and imaginary worlds in works that suggest as much a dreamscape as a landscape. Hayley lives and works in Los Angeles and will be staying in Studio Rojo during May 2023.
Anna Nero
Within the Artists-in-Residence Program, CCA is delighted to host the artist Anna Nero. Born in 1988 in Moscow, Russia, Anna obtained her MFA diploma at HGB Leipzig in Germany and she has been lecturer and painting professor at the Art Academy Mainz. Growing up in a family of artists, Anna has been exposed to art ever since she was born. For her, it was not a matter of ‘finding art’; It was always there. She experiments with different approaches and develops a practice of her own in between the systematic and the intuitive. Anna currently lives and works in Frankfurt am Main. and will be staying in Studio Verde during May 2023.
