Artists in residence, June 2023

Pierre Knop

Within the Artists-in-Residence Program, CCA is delighted to host the artist Pierre Knop. Born in 1982 in Nancy, France, Knop works intuitively and organically, usually on multiple canvases at once, embracing chances and presumed mistakes in his process. His use of multiple mediums on one canvas creates dynamic and vibrant compositions, ranging from richly saturated nearly flattened fields of colour to freely sketched areas of gestural lightness. The protagonists of his paintings are overpowering landscapes, their figures merge with mountains, beaches or forests and exist in a certain tension to their environment. Pierre lives and works in Cologne and will be a resident at CCA during June 2023.

Lukas Marxt

Within the Artists-in-Residence Program, CCA is delighted to host the artist Lukas Marxt. Born in 1983 in Schladming, Austria, Marxt investigates the traces of human intervention in ostensibly natural spaces like the desert or the Arctic Sea, but also in urban contexts. At times he intervenes himself. He reveals that the places he seeks out, which are usually located at the periphery of economic and political centres, are historically and esthetically charged projection screens for concepts like nostalgia and freedom, and above all pervaded with capitalist structures of exploitation. His videos as well as his installations question regimes of the gaze as well as those of representation. Lukas lives and works in Cologne and will be staying in Studio Verde during June 2023.

Jana Gunstheimer

Within the Artists-in-Residence Program, CCA is delighted to host the artist Jana Gunstheimer. Born in 1974 in Zwickau, Germany, Gunstheimer draws on the world as a reservoir of undiscovered possibilities, ferreting out what is concealed and mysterious. Reality turns out, in her art, to be a conglomerate of labyrinthine spaces and fantastic stories. Fact and fiction can no longer be clearly separated. Gunstheimer’s works always operate with possible truths, deftly taking up past or contemporary events and spinning them out, with striking logical consistency, into the realm of invention. Jana currently lives and works in Germany and will be staying in Studio Azul during June 2023.

Ava Samii

Within the Artists-in-Residence Program, CCA is delighted to host the artist Ava Samii. Born in 1990 in Tønder, Denmark, Ava’s medias are sculpture, performance and installation, through which she creates a realization of fictional narratives and scenes that revolve around alternative directions of evolution, mythology and hybrids between the recognizable and the unknown. The works act as props and a kind of testimony from a dream or parallel world, where the working process becomes the interpretive link between fiction and reality. Although she is not yet a bachelor, Ava Samii has already exhibited her work at Collaborations by Tania and Thomas Asbæk and Gether Contemporary in Kødbyen. Ava currently lives and works in Copenhagen and will be staying in Studio Rojo during June 2023.
