Artists in residence, February 2024
Rusudan Khizanishvili
Rusudan Khizanishvili (b. 1979), based in Tbilisi, Georgia, is interested in subjective female imagery and mythological iconography, which she combines with the exoticism of Georgian painting to reveal her own colorful palette. Her identity as a female painter formed within a particular culture, reflections on motherhood, and the historical singularity of her country have all become objects of visual exploration and have influenced her work.
Over the past fifteen years Khizanishvili has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions including Museum of Modern Art Tbilisi, Museum of Literature of Georgia, Tbilisi State Silk Museum, Mark Rothko Foundation at Daugavapils. Her major solo exhibitions are 《Velvet Armor》(SEOJUNG
ART, Seoul, Korea, 2023) and 《Beauty and the Beast》(Galerie Kornfeld, Berlin, Germany, 2022). In 2015 Khizanishvili represented Georgia among five other artists at 《The 56th Venice Art Biennale》.
Her works are in the collections of the Georgian National Museum, private collections of Stefan Simchowitz in the U.S. and Ettore Rossetta in Italy, Breus Foundation in Russia, and Collezione Taurisano in Italy.
Anna Rettl
Within the Artist-in-Residence Program, CCA is delighted to host artistists Anna Rettl (Austria, 1992).
Anna Rettl lives and works in Copenhagen, Denmark. In her practice, she deals with the tradition of figuration and formulas for physical expression. Rettl’s paintings are variations of canonical artists’ work, whose formal structures she reuses while the style, technique, and content are hers. A set of familiar formulas for physical expression has, until recently, dominated Western art history. Rettl investigates how artists have embraced or rejected these formulas, questioning how to represent sentient beings in painting today effectively.
Rettl received an MFA from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Copenhagen in 2021. She participated in the MAUAMUAS Independent Study Programme in Lisbon in 2018 and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Rettl is part of the roving artist-run space Jennifee-See Alternate. Recently, she exhibited at O - Overgaden, Outpost Gallery, and Arcway in Copenhagen.
