Nothing to Declare

The title of this exhibition, Nothing to Declare, centers on the metaphor of an internal customs checkpoint—that high-stakes threshold where we decide what is worth revealing and what must remain hidden. In this body of work, the “contraband” isn't illegal goods, but rather the inventory of a mind: the impulses, attachments, and sensory memories gathered during the artist’s residency in Andratx, Mallorca. While these ceramic bags are physically present, they carry a weight that has no "market value" to an outsider, representing the personal experiences that are often too specific or fragmentary to be fully translated or shared.
The physical presence of the work is inseparable from the landscape of the Balearic coast. The glazes are a direct response to the specific palette of the island—the shifting blues and greens of the Mediterranean Sea and the muted, earthy tones of the mountains that rise sharply behind the studio. Clinging to the surfaces of these bags are small ceramic charms—sheep, goats, and dogs—that act as artifacts of the residency. They are not merely ornaments, but sensory markers of the sound of distant bells and the presence of life in the hills.
There is a deliberate tension in the accessibility of these forms; some bags are left open, inviting a gaze that ultimately finds only shadows, while others are permanently sealed, guarding their contents against inspection. This mirrors the selective way we move through the world, choosing what to reveal and what to keep “under the lid.” Even when a vessel is open, the true value remains unrecognized by the outsider, emphasizing the artist's interest in how personal meaning is carried. Through the repetitive act of working the clay, these fleeting moments are given weight, suggesting that while we may claim to have nothing to declare, we are often carrying the heavy, vibrant traces of everywhere we have been.
Erline is a Tokyo-based multidisciplinary artist working across ceramics, paintings, and installation. Her practice centers on hand-built ceramic bags and other whimsical yet weighty objects that merge craft with cultural critique. Drawing from the languages of fashion, consumer culture, and everyday ritual, she explores femininity as both performance and survival strategy. Erline’s works often blur the line between ornament and burden, playfulness and pressure—asking what we choose to carry, and how it shapes our presence in the world. Inspired by the current fascination with girls and their trinkets, she examines how small charms, chains, and accessories operate as both intimate self-expression and collective ritual. She has exhibited internationally in Tokyo, Copenhagen, Sydney, and New York.
